As a cat lover I was drawn to this tale in childhood  partly because Puss in Boots was anthropomorphic and could talk and I wished I could talk to my cat. Many fairy and folk tales ascribe human characteristics to animals, gods and other non-human objects to help  make the unfamiliar more relatable by interpreting them through a human lens.  The gist of the story of Puss in Boots highlights how intelligence, charm and deceit (the cats) helped the poor millers son, Jack, overcome low social status and emphasizes the importance of looking the part to gain influence (the fancy boots). Puss uses trickery to turn Jack into the wealthy Marquis of Carabas. By bringing gifts to the King and defeating an Ogre, the cunning cat secures an estate and a royal marriage to a beautiful princess. In my depiction Puss wears hipster thigh-high boots I found in a fashion magazine with a floral brocade waistcoat and neck scarf. He sports a jaunty red beret with a feather and is surrounded by gold coins representing the wealth he brings the poor millers son who’s only inheritance was the magical cat. In the upper left corner is an old mill with gold falling from it set in curved machinery to represent the grinding wheels of mills.
