A Bowl of Malaysia with Leaf Wrapped Dumpling

Description

This collage displays Peranaken culture through food, fruit, spices and furniture inlaid with shiny bits of mother of pearl. I learned about this blend of Chinese and Malay culture when living in Singapore where some of the best food is Peranaken such as laksa, a coconut curry noodle soup scented with the herb that is sort of a cross between mint and citrusy cilantro. Here there is also a banana leaf-wrapped rice dumpling, a typical steaming method that imparts the grassy herbal scent of the leaf to what it enfolds. Chinese men migrated to and settled in Southeast Asia for work and married local Malay women, combining the two cultures in one delicious melting pot just like this image does. Perfect for adorning your dining room or kitchen and transporting you to Asia.
