We have a mile long looping trail around the six acres above sea level near Mountain View in the Puna District of Hawaii where I composed this nature collage on a section of melted lava rock. I liked the contrast of white and orange leaves against the black pools of lava with the pop of the purple-blue wildflowers and wild orchid circled by a sort of long crabgrass vine like a wreath enclosing my leafy and flower finds along the loop that I walk just about every day finding inspiration. Not everyone has lava rock in their backyard so I wanted to make use of this unique landscape not found in many places and born of the volcanic eruptions of Madame Pele (the Volcano Goddess of Hawaii) over centuries reminding us that molten lava is just under our feet.
